Steelers should add one of two recently released veterans to secondary

The Steelers have had a very aggressive offseason under general manager Omar Khan and that shouldn't change with two quality defenders back on the open market.

Over the past 24 hours, the Saints released CB Bradley Roby and the Texans released CB Desmond King. Both veterans would give Pittsburgh an upgrade at a position they have struggled to fill for years.

Roby, a Super Bowl champion and former first-rounder in 2014, has been a reliable corner throughout his nine-year career. He has 370 tackles, five sacks, eight forced fumbles, 11 interceptions and 85 passes defensed in his career.

King would also bring versatility to the Steelers as he played 505 snaps at outside corner and 334 snaps at slot corner last season. He has 424 tackles, 8.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, nine interceptions and 33 passes defensed in his six-year career.

Pittsburgh did rebuild its cornerback room this offseason with the additions of Patrick Peterson, Joey Porter Jr. and Chandon Sullivan. But the team could still use one last signing following an underwhelming preseason by CB James Pierre.

Steelers inside Ray Fittipaldo projected the team would add another corner rather than keep Pierre.

"James Pierre doesn't make the cut in this projection," Fittipaldo wrote following Pittsburgh's final preseason game. "The Steelers won't go into the season with only three outside corners, so look for Khan to acquire one or grab one off the waiver wire."

With CB Levi Wallace also on the roster, the Steelers have three outside corners remaining if they want to move on from Pierre.

Rookie CB Cory Trice Jr. would have been the perfect replacement, but he is out for the season after suffering a right leg injury in training camp.

The "Khan Artist" has been alive and well in Pittsburgh. So, don't be surprised if he strikes once again before the start of the 2023 season.
