Texans-Ex Royce Freeman Signs With L.A.
USA TODAY Sports

Say what you will about the running back situation across the NFL, but the Los Angeles Rams may have just fortified the argument that solid backs are affordable and interchangeable.

Literally hours following the weekend retirement of Sony Michel — a two-time Super Bowl champion — the Rams on Sunday signed veteran Royce Freeman from the Houston Texans.

Freeman is a solid running back with ample experience, having played the last two seasons in Houston. He was a third-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and at 6-0, 235 pounds, he can play with power.

Despite his obvious talent, Freeman didn't get too big of a shot with the Texans, only rushing for a combined 209 yards on 76 carries in two seasons. Houston didn't have too much of need for him, especially last season, as it relied heavily on rookie Dameon Pierce — who's set to have an even bigger role next season.

So without a big role and with plenty of experience, Freeman moves to Los Angeles prepared to once again contribute in the way he knows he can, joining a room featuring Cam Akers, Kyren Williams, Zach Evans and Ronnie Rivers.

The Rams suggest they might add another running back for camp, especially given that Michel is no longer with the franchise.

"The epitome of a pro, great competitor and his next chapter is going to be exciting," Rams coach Sean McVay said of Michel. "He's got so many gifts that he can offer to people and so we'll wish him the best. It's a bummer, but his body's feeling like it's talking to him and I have nothing but respect and appreciation for the competitor that he is."

So Michel’s body is saying “no.” And the Rams just “yes” to Royce Freeman. That leaves the Texans, who look like they're ready to bid farewell to their veteran as Pierce steps up to the place.
