The 49ers Should Sign Logan Thomas
USA TODAY Sports

Free agency officially begins on March 13 and the 49ers need another tight end. They should sign Logan Thomas.

He's not the best tight end available, but the 49ers aren't looking for a starter. They're looking for a No. 2 tight end who can play alongside George Kittle and spell him from time to time. Thomas would be perfect.

The Washington Commanders recently released him -- they're rebuilding and he'll be 33 next season. The 49ers probably could sign him to a one-year deal worth roughly $4 million. And he'd be worth it.

Last season, Thomas caught 55 passes and scored 4 touchdowns, as opposed to Kittle who caught 65 passes and scored 6 touchdowns. What a terrific tandem they would be for a year. Remember, a few years ago the 49ers signed former Washington tight end Jordan Reed to be Kittle's running mate, but Reed couldn't stay healthy. And the 49ers haven't had a quality No. 2 tight end since then. Thomas could change that.

The 49ers' current backup tight ends are Charlie Woerner, who's a stiff, Ross Dwelley, who never plays, Cam Latu, who couldn't even make the team last year (he spent the season on I.R.) and Brayden Willis, who's biggest (only?) play last season was a penalty in overtime of the Super Bowl.

Thomas would be a massive upgrade over all them.

Of course, the 49ers could draft a tight end, but they tried that last season (Latu) and struck out. Better to sign a known commodity, especially when he's affordable.
