Three reasons to be optimistic about the Chargers

Three reasons to be optimistic about the Los Angeles Chargers

In 2022, the Chargers won 10 games for only the third time since 2008 and made their first playoff appearance since 2018, signaling they're on the verge of something big. Here are three reasons to be optimistic about the Chargers:

1. Kellen Moore can take the offense to the next level

In 2022, the offense ranked ninth in yards and 13th in scoring, but it clearly needs tweaks. When maximized, offensive weapons Justin Herbert and Austin Ekeler could drive a top-five unit. So, Los Angeles fired Joe Lombardi and hired former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to lead the offense.

Moore is a keen offensive mind. As Dallas' OC for four seasons, his offenses ranked top 10 in scoring three times and No.1 in yards twice.

Under Moore's guidance, Dak Prescott threw a career-high 37 passing TDs in 2021. Los Angeles' talent level is equivalent to Dallas', so the Chargers should also excel.

2. Herbert's becoming an MVP candidate

Entering his fourth season, Herbert should insert himself in the MVP race.

Only 24, Herbert set NFL records for passing TDs (102) and yards (14,089) during his first three seasons. In 2022, he tied for eighth in passing touchdowns (25), ranked third in completion percentage (68.2 percent) and second in passing yards (4,739).

The hiring of Moore creates an environment where he can keep flourishing, capture his first postseason win and augment his case as a perennial MVP candidate.

3. Defensive improvement

The Chargers ranked third in total defense through Weeks 14-18, when Los Angeles went 4-1 and clinched a playoff berth.

The passing defense shined throughout the season, allowing 200.4 yards per game, seventh in the NFL. After cornerback J.C. Jackson suffered a season-ending injury, backup CB Michael Davis had 15 passes defended in 12 starts, tied for sixth in the NFL. Safety Derwin James Jr. made his third Pro Bowl.

A consistent passing defense is essential in the AFC West, where two-time Super Bowl champion Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes await twice a season.
