Three running backs the Eagles should consider at the trade deadline

Don’t let their 7-1 record fool you.  The Philadelphia Eagles ground game could be running out of steam. Over the last three weeks, the Eagles have managed rushing totals of 80 yards (3.6 per carry), 45 yards (3.8 per carry) and 59 yards (2.7 per carry). Here are three running backs the Eagles should consider ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline.

Derrick Henry, Tennessee Titans

Know why Henry’s name keeps coming up in trade scenarios with Philadelphia? Because it makes sense. D’Andre Swift may be the NFL’s fourth-leading rusher, but his 117 carries are the second-most of his career and already 18 more than he had in 2022.

Henry is the epitome of  a workhorse back and sits just behind Swift as the league’s fifth-leading rusher. Like Swift, he’ll be a free agent at the end of the year which makes him a luxury on a team like the Titans.

Tennessee just turned the offense over to rookie quarterback Will Levis, who responded by throwing four touchdowns in a win against Atlanta. Tyjae Spears should be next. The rookie running back hasn’t seen many touches behind Henry, but he’s looked impressive with 5.8 yards per carry.

With the team rebuilding, Tennessee can afford to lose Henry. With a stretch of upcoming games that includes the Cowboys, Chiefs and Bills, Philadelphia can’t afford to pass on him if he’s available.

Zack Moss, Indianapolis Colts

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni has no ties to Moss, but he spent three years as the Colts’ offensive coordinator before leaving for Philadelphia. Maybe he should make a call? Moss joined Indianapolis midway through the 2022 season and had a modest 76 carries for 365 yards on a bad team

In three starts in relief of Jonathan Taylor this year, Moss averaged 93.3 yards per game and 4.3 yards per carry. He also ran for 165 yards with two scores in Taylor’s first game back. Taylor has 11 more carries than Moss over the last two games and is clearly the feature back with a new three-year, $42M contract.

Moss is a free agent at the end of the year so the Colts may want to get something for him now. His experience with backfield committees in Buffalo and Indianapolis could make him an ideal running mate for Swift.

D’Onta Foreman, Chicago Bears

Foreman has been the Bears leading rusher for the last three weeks. His 34 yards against the Chargers on Sunday aside, he’s played well in relief of injured running backs Roschon Johnson and Khalil Herbert in recent games.

After starting the season as a healthy scratch, Foreman is averaging 4.5 yards per carry and ran for 89 yards and two scores against the Raiders in Week 7. He added another score through the air in that contest. The 27-year-old back had five games of 100 yards or more with the Carolina Panthers last year and three with the Titans in 2021.

Johnson returned to the Bears’ lineup on Sunday after suffering a concussion against the Commanders in Week 5. Herbert has been on injured reserve since suffering an ankle injury in the same game but could be back by Week 10.

There may not be room for Foreman once Chicago has their full complement of backs, but he’d do well as a complimentary piece in the Eagles’ backfield.
