USFL revival gets started with draft, headlined by QB Shea Patterson

The United States Football League will make its return after more than three decades when its season kicks off in April, but first the rosters need to be constructed. That got started Tuesday with the 2022 USFL Draft.

Unlike a typical sports draft, each round was position specific with quarterbacks in round one, pass rushers and defensive ends in rounds two through four, offensive tackles in rounds five through seven, cornerbacks in rounds eight through 11, and quarterbacks again in round 12.

The picks largely consisted of former NFL players, including the top selection of the draft, former Michigan QB Shea Patterson, who briefly spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020 before heading to the Canadian Football League. Now he's joining the USFL's Michigan Panthers.

Other notable selections in the first round included former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Alex McGough, who's now a member of the Birmingham Stallions and former New York Giants quarterback Kyle Lauletta, who was picked by the Pittsburgh Maulers.

The very last pick of the USFL Draft was former Denver Broncos first-round pick Paxton Lynch, who was released by the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders on Monday.
