Avalanche’s Logan O’Connor could tie obscure NHL shorthanded goal record on Tuesday

Colorado Avalanche forward Logan O’Connor has started the season on fire, and tonight, he has the chance to tie an obscure NHL record. Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk broke it all down.

Tyler Yaremchuk: On the line tonight, Frank, a very interesting and obscure record on the post for tonight.  Colorado’s Logan O’Connor has the chance to tie Dave Reid of the Toronto Maple Leafs for most consecutive games with a short-handed goal; Reid holds the streak at four games dating back to 1990. It’s one of those things where O’Connor isn’t a superstar player by any means, but you almost trip and fall into the record book. There’s a small contingent of players that have had three-game streaks, but he’s got the chance to tie four.

Frank Seravalli: It really is cool to keep an eye on; it’s something you don’t think about, hence why we call it obscure. To score three shorthanded goals in an entire season is a great year; someone was really active on their penalty kill and became a threat. But to do it four games in a row is really something. You see, Mike Richards did it in 2009 with the Flyers, Joe Sakic did it with the Avs in 1998, and, of course, Mario Lemieux did it with the Penguins in 1996. But to get to that level  with Dave Reid, I’m sure it’s one of those records you look at and say, “Four in a row, I didn’t think anyone could touch that.” So Logan O’Connor is able to utilize that speed, and that’s been a big difference-maker for the Avs, and I think they’ve been one of the most exciting teams in the league to watch at this point. They clearly entered the year with a chip on their shoulder, their undefeated run is on the line tonight, and I have a feeling they will be the last team standing. Achieving this record will be a good way in terms of progress on remaining undefeated.
