Boston Bruins acquire Pat Maroon from Minnesota Wild for draft pick

Maroon, 35, has 16 points in 49 games for the Wild this year, his first with the club. The 35-year-old is set to become a UFA at the end of the season with an AAV of $800,000.

Drafted 161st overall in 2007, Maroon has 304 points and 990 penalty minutes in 778 games.

Maroon required back surgery this season and is still a few weeks away from getting back into the lineup, but Maroon has a chance to win a fourth Stanley Cup. He won three in a row – first in St. Louis in 2019, and then two in a row with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Maroon was also part of the Lightning’s playoff effort when they fell to Colorado in 2022.

Maroon has been a big-time playoff performer, recording 51 points and 197 penalty minutes in 150 games over nine playoff runs.

Known as the “Big Rig,” Maroon was the most penalized player in the NHL last season with 150 PIM. It was the highest number of his career, showing he’s not afraid to mix it up with anyone in the league, even at an older age.

Adding Maroon to the fray gives Boston even more muscle on a team that has Charlie McAvoy, Brad Marchand, Trent Frederic and Parker Wotherspoon, among others.

The Bruins are coming off a 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at home on Thursday afternoon, moving them to 5-1-4 over the past 10 games. The club sits one point behind the Florida Panthers for first in the NHL and are set for a three-game stretch against non-playoff teams with Pittsburgh on Saturday, St. Louis on Monday and Montreal on Thursday.
