Calgary Flames recall Nick DeSimone from AHL’s Wranglers, return Matt Coronato to AHL
Bob Frid-USA TODAY Sports

In advance of their meeting with Vegas on Tuesday night, the Calgary Flames have made a pair of roster moves. They’ve summoned defenceman Nick DeSimone from the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers. To make room on the active roster, they’ve re-assigned forward Matt Coronato back to the Wranglers.

The transactions themselves are pretty straightforward. The Flames were carrying seven defenders, but the injury to Chris Tanev drops them to just six and removes any wiggle room in case somebody gets stick or banged up in warm-up. Similarly, with the flu bug seemingly finished decimating the Flames’ room, they were carrying 14 forwards, two more than needed, and swapping Coronato for DeSimone gives the Flames an extra healthy blueliner for the remainder of the trip.

On this most recent call-up, Coronato played once and was a healthy scratch once. He was explicitly brought up in response to the flu bug knocking out a couple Flames forwards, so his return to the minors isn’t an indictment of his performance but rather a reflection of the club’s roster realities – and a sign that the flu has perhaps finished with the Flames.

Coronato has one goal and two points in 11 NHL games this season, and eight goals and 18 points in 14 AHL games. DeSimone has four points in eight NHL games this season, and eight points in 10 AHL games.

With the roster moves, the Flames remain at 23 active players: two goaltenders, eight defencemen (including Tanev) and 13 forwards. The injury reserve includes four players: Oliver Kylington (long-term), Kevin Rooney (long-term), Oliver Kylington and Jacob Markstrom.

The Flames play the Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Tuesday night.
