Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen is set to resume on-ice activities

One of the league’s veteran netminders is going to be strapping on the pads once again.

On Wednesday, the Carolina Hurricanes announced goaltender Frederik Andersen is set to resume on-ice activities.

The 34-year-old has been out of the lineup since Nov. 2, and was dealing with a blood clotting issue that kept him on the shelf for the better part of two months. He was initially scheduled to get back on the ice last month, but another setback forced him to take it easy over the last few weeks.

“In November, Frederik Andersen was diagnosed with a deep-vein thrombosis,” general manager Don Waddell stated in a social media release. “He has been on anti-coagulation medication since that time…Frederik has resumed off-ice activities without complication and will now begin limited on-ice conditioning.”

“I am thrilled that I’m a step closer to joining my teammates and competing on the ice,” Andersen stated. “I feel grateful for the help and support I’ve received from my family and doctors, as well as the entire Hurricanes organization.”

Waddell said the team will provide updates as Andersen continues to progress.

It goes without saying that Andersen has been injury prone over his tenure in Raleigh, even dating back to his final days with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Danish netminder had a 4–1–0 record and an .894 save percentage in six games before leaving the lineup.

During his absence, the Hurricanes have relied on the young Pyotr Kochetkov, along with the revamped Antti Raanta. Both have been good enough to keep Carolina in the hunt for the playoffs, though a lot of credit has to be given to the team in front of them.

The Canes (28-15-5) do not play until Feb. 6, when they welcome the league-leading Vancouver Canucks to town. They are currently second in the Metropolitan Division, two points back of the first-place New York Rangers, and five points clear of the Philadelphia Flyers for third.
