Montréal Canadiens claim Colin White off waivers
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Montréal Canadiens have claimed forward Colin White off waivers from the Pittsburgh Penguins Thursday.

White had played 11 games for the Penguins since they called him up in January and was held pointless. White averaged 9:57 of ice time during his time with the Penguins.

The Penguins signed White to a one-year deal in October after he attended Pittsburgh’s training camp on a professional tryout contract. White played 21 games with the Penguins’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, scoring five goals and five assists for 10 points in that frame.

The 26-year-old scored eight goals and seven assists for 15 points in 68 games with the Florida Panthers last season. He added two assists in 21 playoff games during the Panthers’ run to the 2023 Stanley Cup Final.

The Ottawa Senators originally selected White in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft. White spent two seasons in the NCAA with Boston College after his draft year before turning pro with the Senators organization in 2017. White struggled to regain his previous form after signing a six-year, $4.75 million AAV contract with the Senators as a restricted free agent in August 2019. He collected 20 goals and 51 points in 130 games over the following three seasons before being bought out in 2022 by Ottawa.

Through 303 career games over parts of eight NHL seasons with the Penguins, Senators and Panthers, White has racked up 44 goals and 69 assists for 113 points. He’s chipped in two assists in 22 career playoff contests.

The Canadiens currently sit seventh in the Atlantic Division with a 22-26-8 record to go with 52 points through 56 games. Montreal is set to face off against the Penguins tonight and the New Jersey Devils on Saturday. It’s unclear whether or not White will draw into the lineup tonight or Saturday.
