One Last Goodbye? Jonathan Toews Considering Retirement, Per Reports
Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

The Blackhawks captain is reportedly giving serious consideration to hanging up the skates at the end of the 2022-23 season.

Jonathan Toews has been everything a Chicago Blackhawks fan could ask for in a captain. Delivering three Stanley Cups to the city of Chicago and leading the greatest era of Blackhawks hockey that many will ever witness was no easy feat, but Toews seemed to handle it with ease. That's probably one of the reasons he earned the nickname "Captain Serious" so early on in his career.

As the Blackhawks of old have been dismantled piece by piece, Toews has remained a constant presence. While Blackhawks fans said painful goodbyes to Marian Hossa, Patrick Sharp, Brent Seabrook, Duncan Keith, Corey Crawford, and most recently Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews has remained in the Windy City since being drafted by the Blackhawks in 2006.

While Kane chose to waive his no-movement clause and go to New York in hopes of winning another Stanley Cup, Toews chose to stay. His reasons behind the decision were likely more related to his current health conditions that have kept him out of the lineup since the NHL All-Star break, but stay he did.

However, it might be time for Blackhawks fans to say one last final goodbye. According to reports, Captain Serious is seriously considering retirement at the end of the 2022-23 season.

As most Hawks fans are already aware, Toews' contract with the Blackhawks expires at the conclusion of the season. It's also no secret that the Blackhawks are in the midst of what will be a multi-year rebuild. Both of these factors were sure to put a bit of a damper on reunion expectations following the 2022-23 season. Add in Toews' current health situation, and things become even more complicated.

Toews issued the following statement after announcing his decision to remain with the Blackhawks on Feb. 19.

At this point, Jonathan Toews may have already played his final game in a Blackhawks uniform. Per head coach Luke Richardson's update earlier this week, Toews hasn't taken that step yet to get back on the ice, though he is around the team and working out. With only 14 games remaining over the final month of the season, a return to the ice is far from guaranteed.

Should it happen, expect a raucous crowd to pack the United Center for the Blackhawks' season finale on April 13.

Regardless of how the next few weeks play out, one thing is certain. Toews will go down as one of the greatest Blackhawks of all time.

As the saying goes, a great captain always goes down with his ship. The last-standing member of the Chicago Blackhawks' 2010s Stanley Cup dynasty era, Jonathan Toews, is seemingly doing just that.
