Sharks acquire Klim Kostin from Red Wings for Radim Simek, seventh-round pick

The San Jose Sharks acquired forward Klim Kostin from the Detroit Red Wings for defenseman Radim Simek and the New Jersey Devils’s seventh-round pick in 2024, acquired by the Sharks in February 2023.

The 24-year-old Kostin has three goals and an assist for four points in 33 games with the Red Wings this season. Taken in the first round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues, Kostin spent part of three seasons with thet Blues, scoring five goals and six assists for 11 points in 46 games.

The Russian forward was traded to the Edmonton Oilers for Dmitri Samorukov in October 2022. In 57 games with the Oilers in 2022-23, Kostin scored 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points.

Meanwhile, the 31-year-old Simek has spent six seasons with the Sharks, scoring seven goals and 22 assists for 29 points in 209 career NHL games. He signed a four-year, $9 million contract extension ahead of the 2020-21 season, but the undrafted blueliner has struggled through his last four seasons, dealing with injuries and healthy scratches.

He has spent the entire 2023-24 season with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda, scoring four goals and 12 assists for 16 points in 40 games.
