Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin to play Monday after 17-game injury absence
Perry Nelson-USA TODAY Sports

Minnesota Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin will play in Monday night’s game against the New York Islanders after missing 17 games with an upper-body injury, according to a report by The Athletic‘s Michael Russo.

Brodin, 30, sustained an injury while being on the receiving end of a heavy hit by Evander Kane in Minnesota’s 4-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place back on December 8.

The Wild have been gradually getting players back from injury of late, with both Kirill Kaprizov and Filip Gustavsson returning to duty in Saturday’s 6-0 loss to the Arizona Coyotes.

Now, it’s Brodin’s turn. The veteran shutdown defender has nine points (one goal, eight assists) while averaging 23:59 of ice time in 25 games with the Wild thus far in the 2023–24 regular season.

Brodin is currently in the third season of the seven-year contract he signed with the Wild back in 2020. His deal carries a $6 million cap hit and a full no-movement clause in the first four years.

The Wild originally selected Brodin in the first round (No. 10 overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft. The Karlstad, Sweden product has spent his entire NHL career with Minnesota, collecting 48 goals and 222 points in 766 games.

Brodin made his NHL debut with the Wild back in the shortened 2012–13 season, collecting 11 points in 45 games with the team. He’s been a fixture in the lineup ever since and has helped the Wild qualify for the playoffs 10 times over that span; Brodin has skated in 67 postseason contests in his NHL career.

The Wild are slated to take on the Islanders at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN on Monday evening at 5:00 p.m. CT. Minnesota has won just two of its last 10 games and is still without team captain Jared Spurgeon.
