Chelsea are following the strategy for building a squad for the future under the ownership of BluesCo and that’s why many players have been tied to lengthy contracts in recent years. Now, another interesting contract extension update has popped up concerning Mykhailo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez.

How Lengthy are Mudryk and Fernandez’s Contracts?

The Evening Standard’s Nizaar Kinsella has reported that the Blues have exercised their option to extend the contracts of Mudryk and Fernandez. This is based on findings from documents released by the Football Association which shows that the Chelsea duo’s contracts will expire when they’re well into their 30s.

It is stated that the Argentine midfielder still has eight years left on his contract which will expire in the summer of 2032. When it comes to the Ukrainian winger, his contract is valid for the next seven years and is supposed to expire in 2031. Kinsella adds that it’s still unclear why Chelsea opted to further extend the contracts of these two players after having initially tied them down to long enough deals anyway.

The FA documents also clear out any confusion over the wage structure of these two players; Mudryk earns a salary of around £97,000-a-week, while the Fernandez earns about £180,000-a-week as per his current contract arrangements.

What do the Lengthy Chelsea Contracts Mean?

Interestingly, Mudryk and Fernandez are not the only Chelsea players who are tied down to contracts that will expire well beyond the turn of the decade. Moises Caicedo and Nicolas Jackson also agreed to deals that are valid until 2031. It has been reported that the reason behind this lengthy contract strategy is a ploy from the club to give them more time to pay the large transfer fees for these players in part payments and also to stay clear of potential Financial Fair Play violations.

However, being tied down to such lengthy contracts can cut down these players’ ambitions to play anywhere else and possibly push for an exit from the club. With that being said, Mudryk isn’t one to have shown any interest in leaving Chelsea yet. The 23-year-old, who was hailed as “outstanding” last season, has scored six goals and provided two assists in 33 appearances over what has been an inconsistent 2023/24 season for him personally.
