Former defender Fabio Galante feels it would be “fantastic” for Inter Milan to clinch the Serie A title in the derby against AC Milan.

The former Nerazzurri defender spoke to Unica Calcio Monza, via FCInterNews. He also stressed that the most important thing is ultimately to clinch the title one way or another.

Inter have given themselves quite the opportunity.

The first 32 matches of the season have set up a matchday 33 in which the derby between the Nerazzurri and city rivals Milan could be the decisive match for the Serie A title.

The Nerazzurri are currently fourteen points ahead of their city rivals in the table.

And the Rossoneri are the closest team to Inter in terms of points.

Therefore, a win would be enough to take Inter, mathematically, out of sight of Milan.

Galante: Inter Clinching Serie A Title Vs AC Milan Would Be “Fantastic”

The symbolic significance of Inter clinching the title against Milan would hardly be lost on anyone.

The derby rivalry between the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri is one of the great ones in not just Italian but all of European football.

Moreover, the last time that either side won the title, it was Milan who did so.

The Rossoneri may not have clinched the title directly in a match against Inter. But the derby had been a turning point that season, in a title race that went down to the final day of the season.

The Nerazzurri had also had to suffer some mockery and banter from their city rivals during the latter’s title celebrations.

So winning the derby to clinch this season’s title would certainly feel like revenge for Inter.

Former Inter defender Galante commented on Inter’s season so far.

“They have no weak points,” he said of this Nerazzurri side. “They have great players in every position, from goalkeeper to striker.”

“Right now, you can make in five changes and bring in Sanchez, Arnautovic, Carlos Augusto.”

“It’s a shame about the Champions League, though,” Galante admitted. “For me we could have gone back to the final.”

“But that’s its own competition, where every little thing has to go right for you.”

“But I think that overall the work of Simone Inzaghi has been like a crescendo, he’s shown that he’s worthy of being at a top club.”

Galante noted that “There’s not much left before we win the second start.”

“If it comes in the derby, that would be fantastic for the club and the fans,” the former defender said.

“But if it comes against Torino, or in the match after that, that’s fine as well. The important thing is to clinch the title.”
